great article. i totally and unexpectedly fell in l-o-v-e with lisbon two years ago, and have been longing to return. now i'll have some new places to check out on my list!
The baroque aesthetic of the blue and white tiles is not to everyone's taste but everyone gains a new appreciation for it during a visit to Lisbon. These decorative pieces are everyone from ordinary façades to church and palace interiors, and the best part of a visit is discovering them by chance and taking time to admire these true works of art. Guidebooks fail to point out the most notable examples, but here's a good guide: http://www.lisbonlux.com/culture/azulejos.html. You may also choose to stay at the old-style hotels (not necessarily the palace hotels) to find rooms such as the one pictured on your post.

What a lovely, beautifully written article. I may be in Australia, but Lisbon's now on my list too!
