Allow me to indulge in fantasy for a moment...
I came across these pictures of Fonthill, a mansion-turned-tourist-attraction in Pennsylvania. I've actually visited it, but you can't take photos inside.
I love the slightly Dickensesque vibe to these pictures, and how they evoke those eccentric uncles so popular in literature. There's still a part of me that wants to stay in a castle with secret passageways.
In fact this was the home of Henry Chapman Mercer (1856-1930), archaeologist, anthropologist, ceramist, scholar and antiquarian. He's also responsible for the Moravian Tile Works. The tiles are still made today, and the building is definitely worth a visit if you're ever in Bucks County!from Bjorn Wallander, via Head Over Heels

Definitely worth a visit as is the Moravian Tile Works.I visited there about ten (or more) years ago and had forgotten how fantastical the mansion is. As they say (incorrectly) about my home town (NYC), it's a great place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.
I love that simple shaker (?) windsor (?) chair. Wish I had a set of six.
I had no idea as to the history of the building, I just loved the amazing, slightly crumbling interiors. He sounds like an incredibly fascinating individual. Thanks for elaborating and thanks for the link love.

If a space is evocative of those decribed in Dickens novels, it shouold be referred to as 'Dickensian'. Lovely photos.
